How Much Insulation Do I Need?
A good rule of thumb for determining whether you have sufficient attic insulation is to look across your attic space and see if there are any floor joists exposed. The insulation should be well above the joists, so that none are visible. If your insulation is just level or below the floor joists, then you should add more. It should also be evenly spread across the attic floor, so that it is not higher in the middle than along the edges. Once you have determined your need for more insulation, you can choose your product based on R-Value. R-Value is a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the better the performance of the insulation. We recommend an R-Value of R-38, or 10-14 inches of insulation. Fortunately, it is relatively easy and inexpensive to correct improperly insulated attic spaces.
Attic Insulation
Attic Blown-In insulation is becoming more popular every year. It has many advantages over the traditional fiberglass batts, and is quick and easy to install in most homes. It is great for old houses because it can actually be blown into the attics and walls without a lot of trouble for the homeowner or damage to the home. Proper attic insulation improves energy efficiency of a building, and extends the life of a roof because it minimizes the temperature differential between the attic and the air outside. Proper insulation will improve cooling during the hot months, and increase heating during the cold months. Attic insulation is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home.
D&G Roof Systems uses two different types of blown-in insulation: fiberglass and cellulose. The fiberglass based blown-in insulation is made from molten glass that is spun into fibers. Most manufacturers use 20%-30% recycled glass content. Cellulose blown-in insulation is composed of up to 85% recycled newsprint. The remaining content is most commonly a mixture of ammonium sulfate and borate that functions as a fire retardant. These chemicals also deter insects, rodents, and mold. Because Blown-in insulation is loose material it can take any shape and is much easier to fit into oddly shaped spaces such as vaulted ceilings.
Spray Foam Insulation
Urethane Spray Foam Insulation is the most efficient type of insulation. Spray foam insulation, correctly applied, will completely seal the building envelope which strengthens your home. It will protect your home from air and moisture intrusion, help as a sound barrier, and act as a pest inhibitor. It is used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications and is applied directly to all types of construction materials, from wood to steel to masonry and concrete. The high thermal resistance of the product gives polyurethane insulation an R-value typically around R-7 to R-8 per inch, enabling it to provide more thermal resistance with less material than any other type of commercial insulation. A typical batt insulation only provides an R-2 per inch.
Blown-In Insulation
D&G Roof Systems uses two different types of blown-in insulation: fiberglass and cellulose. The fiberglass based blown-in insulation is made from molten glass that is spun into fibers. Most manufacturers use 20%-30% recycled glass content. Cellulose blown-in insulation is composed of up to 85% recycled newsprint. The remaining content is most commonly a mixture of ammonium sulfate and borate that functions as a fire retardant. These chemicals also deter insects, rodents, and mold.
Blown-in insulation must be applied using an insulation blowing machine and is designed for both open-blow applications (such as attic spaces) and closed-cavity applications (such as walls or vaulted ceilings). Blown-in insulation creates a tight fit in each stud cavity and seals around all outlets, pipes, wires, etc. The tight seal created makes blown-in insulation a great sound barrier as well as insulator. Our installers are trained to eliminate settling by creating the perfect combination between the netting and the amount of compression in each cavity.
Batt Insulation
Insulation Batts are made up of extremely fine glass fibers called fiberglass. It is one of the most commonly used forms of insulation. Batts are pre-cut panels of insulation and are available in a variety of lengths, widths and R-values. R-value means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power. Different R-values are required for different areas in your home. R-values range from R-8 to R-38. We carry a wide variety of widths and values that are not carried in home improvement stores, which enable us to complete any job more efficiently.
